Useful information when visiting Egypt

Prior to your visit

•     Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival or an e‑visa—check the latest rules before travelling.
•     Keep printed and digital copies of your passport, visa, and hotel bookings.
•     Expect security checks at hotels, malls, and major sites; it’s normal.

Travel

•     Domestic flights are the fastest way between Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan.
•     Trains between Cairo and Luxor/Aswan are scenic but slow; book higher classes for comfort.
•     Taxis and ride apps (Uber, Careem) work well in Cairo.
•     Nile cruises offer a relaxed way to see temples between Luxor and Aswan.

Food

•     Egyptian cuisine: koshari, ful, taameya, molokhia, and fresh grilled fish.
•     Drink bottled water; avoid ice unless you trust the source.
•     Street food is excellent — choose busy vendors with high turnover.

Money & Payments

•     Cash is still widely used, especially outside major cities.
•     ATMs are common; avoid airport exchange counters.
•     Tipping (“baksheesh”) is part of daily life — small amounts are appreciated for services.

Weather & Comfort

•     Summers are extremely hot, especially in Upper Egypt (Luxor/Aswan).
•     Winter is ideal for sightseeing.
•     The desert can be cold at night — pack layers.

Cultural & Etiquette

•     Egyptians are warm, expressive, and hospitable.
•     Bargaining is normal in markets; do it with humour, not aggression.
•     Dress modestly, especially in rural areas and religious sites.
•     Cairo traffic is intense — plan extra time for everything.

Language & Communication

•     English is widely understood in tourist areas.

Temples, Tombs & Ancient Sites

•     Visit major sites early morning to avoid heat and crowds.
•     Many tombs require separate tickets (e.g., Seti I, Nefertari).
•     Photography rules vary — some places allow phones but not cameras, flash is generally not allowed.
