Useful information when visiting Turkey

Prior to your visit

•     Many nationalities can get an e‑visa quickly online; check your eligibility before travelling.
•     Keep digital and printed copies of your passport, visa, and hotel bookings.
•     Security checks at major sites and malls are normal.

Travel

•     Domestic flights are inexpensive and save huge amounts of time.
•     Intercity buses are comfortable, modern, and widely used.
•     Istanbul’s public transport (trams, ferries, metro) is excellent.
•     Driving is good for the coast but stressful in big cities.

Food

Turkish cuisine is deeply regional.
•     Southeast: kebabs, baklava, pistachios.
•     Aegean: olive oil dishes, seafood, herbs.
•     Black Sea: corn, anchovies, hearty mountain food.
•     Istanbul: a mix of everything.
Tips:
•     Breakfast (kahvaltı) is a feast — don’t miss it.
•     Tea (ηay) is offered everywhere; accept it and enjoy the hospitality.
•     Street food is excellent: simit, dφner, roasted chestnuts, midye dolma (stuffed mussels).
•     Tipping is modest — rounding up is enough.

Money & Payments

•     Cards are widely accepted, but keep some cash for markets and small cafιs.
•     ATMs are common; avoid airport exchange counters.
•     Prices can vary between tourist areas and local neighbourhoods.

Weather & Comfort

•     Summers are hot, especially inland and on the Mediterranean.
•     Spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing.
•     Cappadocia can be cold at night even in summer.

Cultural & Etiquette

•     Turks are warm, expressive, and hospitable.
•     Bargaining is normal in bazaars, but not in restaurants.
•     Friday is a holy day, but everything stays open.
•     Dinner is later in summer, especially on the coast.

Language & Communication

•     English is common in tourist areas, less so elsewhere.

History, Mosques & Ancient Sites

•     Dress modestly for mosques; women may need a scarf.
•     Remove shoes before entering prayer areas.
•     Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace get crowded — go early or late.
