Useful information when visiting Turkey
Prior to your visit
Many nationalities can get an e‑visa quickly online; check your eligibility before travelling.
Keep digital and printed copies of your passport, visa, and hotel bookings.
Security checks at major sites and malls are normal.
Travel
Domestic flights are inexpensive and save huge amounts of time.
Intercity buses are comfortable, modern, and widely used.
Istanbuls public transport (trams, ferries, metro) is excellent.
Driving is good for the coast but stressful in big cities.
Food
Turkish cuisine is deeply regional.
Southeast: kebabs, baklava, pistachios.
Aegean: olive oil dishes, seafood, herbs.
Black Sea: corn, anchovies, hearty mountain food.
Istanbul: a mix of everything.
Tips:
Breakfast (kahvaltı) is a feast dont miss it.
Tea (ηay) is offered everywhere; accept it and enjoy the hospitality.
Street food is excellent: simit, dφner, roasted chestnuts, midye dolma (stuffed mussels).
Tipping is modest rounding up is enough.
Money & Payments
Cards are widely accepted, but keep some cash for markets and small cafιs.
ATMs are common; avoid airport exchange counters.
Prices can vary between tourist areas and local neighbourhoods.
Weather & Comfort
Summers are hot, especially inland and on the Mediterranean.
Spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing.
Cappadocia can be cold at night even in summer.
Cultural & Etiquette
Turks are warm, expressive, and hospitable.
Bargaining is normal in bazaars, but not in restaurants.
Friday is a holy day, but everything stays open.
Dinner is later in summer, especially on the coast.
Language & Communication
English is common in tourist areas, less so elsewhere.
History, Mosques & Ancient Sites
Dress modestly for mosques; women may need a scarf.
Remove shoes before entering prayer areas.
Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace get crowded go early or late.
